Join us on Monday, April 26th, from 7 to 8:30 pm to learn about the human rights crises in Tigray, Ethiopia. Currently, 4.5 million people are displayed, and it is a fast evolving crisis of ethnic cleansing in which the Tigray people are being deliberately starved to death, where sexual violence is used as a weapon, and systematic infrastructure destruction is undermining the region to meet basic human needs. Medical and emergency relief is not allowed adequate access, there are communication blackouts and journalists are not able to move freely.

Speakers will provide the background, context, and overview of the crises, as well as share how Massachusetts residents and global citizens are taking action to bring attention to the crises, demanding peace, and end to the violence.

Speakers:

Lwam Gidey is an undergraduate Computer Science student at Tufts University and incoming Dell Technologies Software Engineer intern. She co-founded Stand With Tigray, a non-profit digital activism platform that aims to raise international awareness about the ongoing human right violations in Tigray, Ethiopia. Lwam is currently campaign organizer and a president of the organization, Stand With Tigray, Inc.

Solomon Mezgebu is a policy analyst, epidemiologist, nutritionist and food scientist by training and practice who did his undergraduate at Addis Ababa University, in the capital of Ethiopia, and graduate and doctoral studies at Tufts University. Originally from Tigray, Mezgebu is a scholar and advocate on governance, human rights, and democratic rights as well as a mediator in conflict resolution and a community leader. He’s also the founder of North Star Tribune and community Radio Wegahita.

Alex de Waal is executive director of the World Peace Foundation and a research professor at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. Considered one of the foremost experts on Sudan and the Horn of Africa, his scholarship and practice has also probed humanitarian crisis and response, human rights, HIV/AIDS and governance in Africa, and conflict and peacebuilding.

Professor de Waal received a D.Phil. from Oxford for his thesis on the 1984-1985 Darfur famine in Sudan. He worked for several Africa-focused human rights organizations, focusing on the Horn of Africa, and especially on avenues to peaceful resolution of the second Sudanese Civil War.
