SUMMARY:Zoom Webinar: The Climate Emergency & Nuclear Power
DESCRIPTION:Please join Citizens Awareness Network for a conversation among climate and anti-nuclear activists in Western Massachusetts. We’ve been working for 30 years to end the use of nuclear power in New England and across the nation\, and advocate for responsible handling of radioactive waste. This stranded\, forever-toxic waste is amassing at reactors and is “the other environmental crisis” that often gets lost in the climate movement’s focus on fossil fuels. \nRSVP here:https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZItcemqqD8vHdYLUARub9X6h33EV-7wjDhe

SUMMARY:The Eight Trillion Dollar War
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of September\, The Cost of War Project at Brown University released its report showing that the costs of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the other post-9/11 wars was a staggering $8 Trillion dollars. And these trillions of dollars are only the extra money the U.S. has paid specifically for those wars. For the most part they do not include the huge Pentagon base budget that pays for everything except for actually fighting these wars. In addition\, the report states that over 900\,000 people were killed in our post-9/11 wars. \nJoin us on October 5 to hear Professor Heidi Peltier present the main findings of this report. She will give us a rundown of the various categories of expenses spent conducing these wars over these 20 years and the significance of these enormous numbers. \nRSVP here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqcuqtqz8pGdS9K0ui1Yq3_XoK2KHuIyuI

SUMMARY:HONK! Festival
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the country and across the globe\, a new type of street band movement is emerging — outrageous and inclusive\, brass and brash\, percussive and persuasive — reclaiming public space with a sound that is in your face and out of this world. Called everything from “avant-oompah!” to a “brassroots revolution\,” these bands draw inspiration from sources as diverse as Klezmer\, Balkan and Romani music\, Brazilian Samba\, Afrobeat and Highlife\, Punk\, Funk\, and Hip Hop\, as well as the New Orleans second line tradition\, and deliver it with all the passion and spirit of Mardi Gras and Carnival. \nAcoustic and mobile\, these bands play at street level\, usually for free\, with no stages to elevate them above the crowd and no sound systems or speaker columns to separate performers from participants. These bands don’t just play for the people; they play among the people and invite them to join the fun. They are active\, activist\, and deeply engaged in their communities\, at times alongside unions and grassroots groups in outright political protest\, or in some form of community-building activity\, routinely performing and conducting workshops for educational and social service organizations of all kinds. \nAt full power\, these bands create an irresistible spectacle of creative movement and sonic self-expression directed at making the world a better place. This is the movement we call HONK!

SUMMARY:McCarthyism\, New and Old: Today’s Culture Wars in Historical Context
DESCRIPTION:We have been here before. From the 1940s through the 1960s\, reactionaries used anti-Communism as a weapon to attack educators at every level. Thousands were investigated\, many jobs were lost\, and “loyalty oaths” were required for decades. Textbooks were sanitized as patriotic myths took the place of careful analyses of evidence. \nMcCarthyism expert Ellen Schrecker looks at how the current assault on teaching the truth reprises the outrages of the Cold War red scare\, while the activist educators\, Jennifer Ruth and Jesse Hagopian\, describe what’s happening today and how teachers at every level are combatting it. Historian Van Gosse moderates the discussion. \nRSVP here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUtd-2vrToiH90I12uhR4iOK7_4chaEHq8S

SUMMARY:The Who\, What & Why of Ethiopia’s Wars and the U.S. Response
DESCRIPTION:Four armies along with several ad hoc militias are fighting in and around northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Each side blames the other(s) for atrocities\, amid warnings of mass starvation and accusations of genocide. The U.S.\, a long-time strategic partner of Ethiopia\, calls for an end to hostilities and a negotiated settlement\, threatening sanctions against all parties. All this in a country led by a recent Nobel Peace prize winner. Gloucester-based author and activist Dan Connell will try to sort this out in a MAPA webinar and explore the prospects and possibilities for peace in the region. \nRSVP here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcsdemgqT8uHdP9MOL1pQ4x27aLxIXI9hef

SUMMARY:International Peace Bureau World Congress

This Congress is an opportunity for diverse people\, groups and causes to share strategies and to articulate alternatives together. A space to create and renovate tools and discourse\, to mobilize citizens from all across the globe in favor of peace and disarmament. A place where we can (re) imagine our world\, and take action for peace and justice. SUMMARY:Opposing Militarism: A Key Task For Climate Justice PART 1
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is an imperialism issue. It’s one of the first lessons we learn as climate activists\, yet it’s also one of the first we forget. In our ambition to combat the most apparent aspects of the emergency we face\, we often overlook some of the driving factors that lie beneath its surface\, missing opportunities to make intersectional connections\, build our community\, and ultimately address the roots of the climate crisis. \nIf you are motivated to take your understanding—and your climate organizing—from the surface to a deeper level\, come join like-minded Massachusetts Peace Action and 350 Mass activists on October 16th and 23rd from 12:00pm – 2:00pm for two self-contained\, complementary webinars led by climate & anti-militarism organizer Nick Rabb. \nThese webinars will explore the intersections of anti-militarism and climate justice: from nuclear weapons to systems of domination and the U.S. empire. Throughout the program\, we will foster inter- and intra-community relationships through small group discussions and idea-sharing\, ultimately developing an alternative vision for a better future and discussing organizing strategies to bring that vision into existence. \nThe peacebuilding and climate justice movements can each be strengthened by the understanding that militarism and the climate crisis are two parts of the same issue: an issue we must address at its core rather than its surface. Collaboration between these and other interconnected although seemingly disparate campaigns will prove to be a key factor in our combined success—and in the survival of our species as we know it.

SUMMARY:The Boys Who Said No: Draft Resistance and the Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:“The Boys Who Said NO!” tells the story of the young men\, subject to our nation’s last draft\, who for reasons of conscience burned their draft cards in protest and chose prison over killing during the Vietnam war. It chronicles “The Resistance”\, an anti-draft movement based on Gandhi’s teachings of nonviolent action and the couple who most publicly embodied its principles\, Joan Baez and David Harris. Baez\, the iconic voice of the anti-war movement\, married Harris\, leader of “The Resistance” shortly before he was sentenced to three years in prison for publicly refusing to be drafted. SUMMARY:Opposing Militarism: A Key Task For Climate Justice PART 2
\nTo RSVP\, click here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEsdu-tqjIpHNVaMhI3a58oH_cM_CMW20AR \nNOTE: If you registered for PART 1 of this 2-part webinar\, you are already registered for part 2!

SUMMARY:Peace\, Activism\, and the Arts: Contested Terrain\, Possible Pathways
DESCRIPTION:The arts – music\, poetry\, theatre\, visual arts\, and more – have been proclaimed as a way of achieving peace. “Music brings people together\,” we are told. These narratives\, which also assert that music is a universal language that transcends borders\, unfortunately neglect the reality that the arts often have been used in ways that serve the purposes of the ruling class: e.g.\, to strengthen structural and systemic violence and exclusion\, to reinforce white supremacy\, to establish colonial hegemony\, to normalize various forms of violence\, and to silence marginalized people. This expropriation and exploitation of the arts is particularly tragic because all those creative endeavors can bring joy\, inspiration\, and respite to all of humankind in all of its diversity. Make love\, not war\, and do art\, not damage. These goals are in our hands. \nThis webinar will explore these issues\, drawing attention to the contested and complex relationships between the arts and peace and justice. The webinar will also present examples of arts activism from the Mexico-U.S. border; Israel\, Palestine\, and the Arab world; and race and mass incarceration. In breakout rooms during the second part of the webinar\, André de Quadros will lead innovative activities that encourage participants to create poetry\, art\, song and/or other artistic work. \nRSVP here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIodO-gqjwoEt3-rpWOOCfMacOUZDNQKJXA
