Springfield

In November of 2018 the Springfield City Council introduced The Welcoming Community Trust Ordinance, sponsored by City Councilor Adam Gomez. The coalition in Springfield included The Resistance Center for Peace & Justice, the ACLU Massachusetts Immigrant Protection Project and the Pioneer Valley Project. Thanks to support from the coalition and Springfield residents, the City Council passed the ordinance in a 10-3 vote in December. Mayor Domenic Sarno then vetoed the ordinance, claiming that it would create financial and legal problems for Springfield. In January, the city council overrode the mayor’s veto, affirming that Springfield is a safe and welcoming city for all its residents!
